A fantastic freshman season for Carl Sandburg College volleyball player Peyton Bowman (Sciota, Ill./West Prairie) now includes a national honor.

The Chargers’ 6-foot-3 middle hitter was named an NJCAA Division II Honorable Mention All-American on Tuesday, capping the most decorated campaign for a player in program history. She also joins current Sandburg assistant Sara Baker (2011) as the only Chargers to earn All-America honors.

A dominant force at the net all season, Bowman helped Sandburg to an undefeated Arrowhead Conference championship (its first league crown since 1990) and its second straight Region IV District A tournament title to make a repeat trip to the national tournament.

Along the way, Bowman became the first Charger to be named Arrowhead Conference Most Valuable Player as well as the first to be named the District Player of the Year. She also was selected to the All-Region IV District A tournament team.

Bowman started all 45 matches for the Chargers (26-19), and her .486 hitting percentage for the season ranked second in NJCAA Division II. She also finished 12th in the country in solo blocks (79), 26th in kills (433), 22nd in points (531) and 47th in total blocks (107).

Bowman recorded double-digit kills 23 times, posting a season-high 18 in the Chargers’ victory Sept. 18 at Illinois Valley. She also had 11 kills on 11 attacks in Sandburg’s District A quarterfinal sweep of Triton.

Bowman picked up at least two blocks in 30 of the Chargers’ matches, highlighted by a season-best eight in Sandburg’s win Sept. against McHenry County.
